If activity in Rye last weekend was anything to go by, it’s clear that visitors are returning to the area once more. Rye felt far busier than in recent weeks, the cattle market car park was at least two thirds full, and tourists dragging their ‘wheelie’ cases were heading for the hotels and holiday accommodation.
Cafes were busy, and the pubs and the High Street too, but its not just tourists and sight-seeing weekenders coming here, other “visitors” were spotted including contractors arriving en masse parked at the rear of the Regent Motel and Bar (main photo) and opposite, in the police station car park the lifeguards’ vehicles were safely parked up, ready for action.
The contractors, Mackley Engineering are working on the sea defences along a 3.7km stretch of the Kent coastline between Hythe and Dymchurch, the beach frontage of a Ministry of Defence (MoD) firing range.
Parked up at the police station, ready to be deployed
