The Rye branch of the WEA’s (Workers Educational Association) Autumn 2016 courses for adult learners are about to start.
Friday, September 30, Practical Gardening returns with an accent on having fun while learning, with 10 weekly two-hour sessions (although the first and last sessions are two and a half hours for admin purposes) starting at 11:15am at Udimore Village Hall.
On Monday, October 3, a weekly course on China begins, looking at the history and culture of the world’s longest continuous civilization which is very quickly regaining its global ascendancy. The class is led by Karen Chang and it takes a magazine style look at topics, rather than a single long chronological history. The class is from 2pm to 4pm at Rye St Mary’s Centre in Lion Street, with 10 weekly sessions.
On Wednesday, October 5, Judith Sillem leads Practical Art – Watercolour Painting and Drawing. This class is designed for all levels from beginners upwards and Judith, who is an accomplished artist, places great emphasis on the course being enjoyable and sociable. The class is from 2pm to 4pm at Rye St Mary’s Centre in Lion Street, with 10 weekly sessions.
There is also a course that meets once a month for a three-hour session for a total of seven months. Starting at 1:30pm on Thursday, October 13 at St Mary’s Centre is Burning Issues, a fun discussion group on current affairs lead by university lecturer David Alfred – and, no doubt, Brexit (Britain’s Exit from Europe) will be an unavoidable topic.
