Sitting resplendently next to the George Hotel is Sailors.
The window displays are warm and invite you in to discover more. Martin, the owner, had previously been selling his sustainable unisex clothing, homeware, books, well-being, and small-batch food items for modern living in Needles Passage but the chance to be more central in Rye came up just before Christmas.
He explained, “We are anti-mass-production and often create our own ranges, collaborate with independent brands and find new talent from the UK. Our shop has a nautical aesthetic that delivers lifestyle collections to wear, use or taste. We only stock what we truly love and strive to deliver items with more than one purpose. When I look at an item with a view to stocking it, I ask myself, Do I love it? And if I don’t love it, then I don’t get it. Our mission is to always bring customers sustainable pieces, whether they be design icons or future classics.”
How did the move come about?
We have always loved the shop next to the George and 2023 was always going to be about moving to a bigger store with a better location. When Katie from the George opened a pop-up in November I just asked if we could move in permanently after Christmas. It was really simple and both Katie and Alex were very supportive and encouraging.
What are your goals for 2023?
Our focus is on establishing the shop in our new location and making a splash in the high street.
Who was your mentor when you were growing up and gave you the passion to achieve your goals?
My parents have always been my mentors. They always worked hard and taught us to do the same and encouraged us to follow our dreams. Also, my maternal grandmother was always busy and every day of her life was full. She was and still is a big influence, and always will be.
