Winchelsea Fete beats the weather

The annual Winchelsea Fete went ahead on Saturday, August 10 despite warnings of very high winds. After a ‘field’ test it was considered safe to proceed with a scaled-down version, based on conditions in the morning.

The Fun Dog Show was a splendid event and the Mayor’s choice of Best in Show was Leo, an 18-month-old Husky crossed with a German Shepherd dog.

Some gallant stallholders took the chance, turned up and were glad they did. In the New Hall there were refreshments, stalls and a seething bric-a-brac emporium.

The Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat (PLIRB) volunteers, served up delicious barbecued burgers and hot dogs, and the Pimm’s Bar was courtesy of the Cricket Club. The day’s final activity was an enjoyable and competitive auction of  donated cakes.

Despite the reduction in attractions the fete retained its atmosphere of fun and games, beautiful setting and most of all goodwill from everybody despite the less favourable conditions. The New Hall committee would like to thank all the brave souls who attended, contributed or volunteered.

Initial figures bear out that it was very well worth going ahead with the fete which facilitated the raising of over £2,000 for local charities, including the Conquest Hospital Scanner Appeal, Sailability of Rye Harbour, PLIRB and Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance as well as the New Hall itself.

Next year’s fete will take place on Saturday, August 8.
