One of the highlights of these youngsters’ (above) half term holiday is a trip to the Nature Reserve, where they take part in the activities that are on offer: last year they made nesting boxes. This year they decided to give something back to the Reserve and embarked on a baking spree.
On Wednesday afternoon, armed with their cakes, they sat outside by the flagpole and sold their wares, raising over £20 which they presented to the staff at the Visitors’ Centre later in the day. Some people didn’t buy the cakes but gave a donation anyway because the Reserve gives a great deal of pleasure to the many visitors who come each year. It was voted Britain’s favourite nature reserve in 2016 in the Land Love Magazine Awards.
One of the most important conservation sites in Britain, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has been recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area for birds and a Ramsar site that takes account of its importance as a wetland on an international scale.
Another highlight of the holiday was to be involved in the community pebble-painting project for the RNLI. The girls and their mothers joined in a workshop and were happy being creative for over an hour and a half.
Pebbles, from South London, commented, “It is very different here from the bustling city where I live. I love the tranquillity.” Ava from Hove added “the painting of the pebbles was amazing, and it will be great to visit in the future and see them in the pavement. Next year we will bake cakes for the RNLI to help them in their mission of saving lives at sea.”
