The word had got around that David Roder and Tim Morgan were to receive another award from Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) on Tuesday October 23 and the Waterworks micro pub on Cinque Port Street was inundated with well-wishers who wanted to congratulate David and Tim on their success.

Graham Hodge from CAMRA had the great pleasure of presenting the award, their eighth award from that organisation in six-and-a-half years.

David is a wonderful, warm-hearted, dedicated worker, a friend to many and a perfect, if somewhat eccentric host. People travel miles to enjoy the atmosphere and of course the ales and the ciders. The Waterworks in Rye and the brewery on the hill outside Rye are always buzzing with punters having fun and the ambiance comes from the caring staff who understand their customers’ needs. David praised Tim for all his hard work and determination to produce the best ale. They are a winning team.

Graham said after the event: “I am the CAMRA festival organiser for the CAMRA Kent & East Sussex Railway beer festival held annually in June. At the festival the public are asked to vote for their favourite beer on offer at the event. We have fifty ales and around twenty-five ciders and perries. The event is a joint effort between CAMRA and the railway.

“This year’s winner as voted by the public was Waterworks Brewery “Pissoir Porter” at 5.3% abv. It is quite unusual for a dark ale to win in the middle of summer as lighter beers tend to dominate in this season. Interestingly, a stout was the runner-up. We will now pass on the information to CAMRA as the beer may have a chance to progress further as part of the process towards CAMRA’s champion beer of Britain annual award. It is important to stress that the award was from the public and not by a committee. It was also good to see a local brewer take this year’s accolade as there are ales from throughout the UK.”

Waterworks buzzing with customers

So watch out on social media for further updates and awards.

There was also a presentation of monies to a local family which needs help to buy equipment for their son who has multiple needs: more details once the parts needed have been received. David and his customers are amazing ambassadors for fundraising in Rye and they help so many people.
