There’s another Rye Repair Cafe on Saturday, September 7 from 10am – 12:30pm at the Rye Community Centre on Conduit Hill.

The second repair cafe in July was as useful and fun as the first and hopefully our next event will be even better! Last time it attracted more volunteers to demonstrate their skills: two electricians, two general repairers including electrics, a computer expert, a woodworker, a volunteer who knows everything about clocks, two people making sewing repairs, a bike repairer and a blade sharpener. It was a slower start but soon broken items arrived and cakes were eaten.

Visitors waiting, volunteers repairing

Those sewing were busy mending and giving advice (please bring clean items as they need to handle them). The woodworker is happy to look at any damaged furniture or suggest what to do for the best. The coffee/tea/cake volunteers are busy keeping people happy while they are waiting for their items to be repaired. New at the last event was bike repairing, with four bikes mended. Two bikes were brought in by a Rye individual to pass on free to a mother and son once mended and they left very happy. Bike repairers will again be on hand as will be a volunteer who can do minor jewellery repairs – so do bring broken clasps, catches or earring hooks.

If anyone would like to bring broken items, could you please keep it to two or three items at most. If you have blades to be sharpened, please don’t bring too many as that means a long wait for those in the queue behind. Also could everyone speak to the receptionist first, as a form has to be filled out which then will be passed on to the relevant volunteer. Please make allowance for waiting if it’s  is busy and enjoy some coffee and cake whilst waiting. Last time 34 items were repaired or advice was given and 26 tools were sharpened. Only three items were deemed beyond repair.

Once again it was a lovely community feel, with volunteers helping each other and mucking in where necessary, a great team effort. Please come and join us September 7. Make a note in your diary for the next two dates which will be again at the Rye Community Centre on Conduit Hill – Saturday, October 12 and November 9.
