A mile a day in May

The RNLI is challenging its supporters and fundraisers to walk, swim, run, skip, or hop for 31 miles during the month of May. People can do this one mile a day, or any way they wish, so long as at the end of the month they have achieved their goal.

We have three youngsters in Rye Harbour who have taken up this challenge. Haiden Debley-Turner is a keen supporter and fundraiser for the station and has decided to take part although he is in a wheelchair: that has not deterred him. The route he has taken is from the car park in the village to the sea and back. He is fast, very fast. I know this because today I accompanied him on his walk which we did at speed. He took no prisoners and did not give me any respite even if I am sixty years older than he is. His mother Clair is so proud of him and many of her friends are supporting him. Haiden told me that his schoolteachers have donated and put up posters around the school to let more people help too.

Skye and Toby Leroy-Lewis are brilliant ambassadors for the RNLI and are so helpful on fundraising days. They too have taken up the Mayday Mile challenge and are walking home from Rye College each day or walking once they are home. The family are supporters of the RNLI and their son Ben is on the crew. It is a family affair.
