Sophie Thorpe is celebrating because, as she explains: “This is the best news! Rye is getting a youth club for 11-17 year-olds, and we need your help.

“Caroline Drummond and I have together created a community interest company (CIC) called Rye Youth Zone CIC, or RYZ for short.

“We saw the need for creating somewhere that youngsters could meet and have things to get involved with and the feedback we received from the sessions over Easter on the multi-use games area (MUGA) gave us some goals to aim for. We are both local mums with children in this age bracket with limited options for their social and emotional development in Rye.

“We have met Jan Crook, a trustee for Rye and District Boys’ Club on Mermaid Street, and have created a partnership in which RYZ can run from RDBC’s building for a full-time youth provision.

“As we work hard to grow the team needed to make this project a success we are very much in need for the local public to get behind us. Please complete a short survey for us to collate feedback from our local community to aid in our decision-making and assist our funding applications.

“We have created two surveys: one for children, specifically 11-17year olds, and the second for parents/carers and the local community.”

“Please see the links below to complete these.

This is indeed special news as the youngsters of Rye have said it is important to them and now it is going to happen. Please support this as much as possible and share it far and wide.

  1. What a great idea but Sophie is right, it needs community backing. The last time someone tried to be creative and establish a youth club in that building, we had computers , billiard table and more and a youth leader, people around it complained.
    So let’s make it happen

  2. Well done to Sophie & Caroline. Much needed and feel sure you will receive the support from local young people and their families. This in turn will hopefully attract necessary funding. Good luck.
