The generosity of the Waterworks

David Roder is one of Rye’s leading lights and is well-loved. He runs two very successful businesses, the Waterworks pub and the Waterworks Brewery. One of the most endearing qualities he possesses is his care for the community and his desire to raise funds for those who need some help for essential equipment or for local charities like the RNLI who rely on donations to carry on saving lives at sea. He does this with such passion that no-one can walk away without donating and he really cares about his customers and all their needs.

David explains: “I want to raise £5,000 to help our little friend Zachary, who has quadriplegia cerebral palsy, epilepsy and dysphagia as a result of a brain injury during birth.

“The Rye Waterworks and customers have raised just over £2,000 so far but we would love to get to our £5,000 target or higher to help Zachary, aged four, to obtain some of the equipment he really needs.

“Zachary is clever and has a wicked sense of humour! He has so much to say, and does so in his own way as he is non-verbal. He loves to learn. However, his disabilities mean that he needs full physical support to get around, has limited use of his limbs. Unfortunately, much of the equipment and therapy which would help Zachary is not available on the NHS. So he doesn’t miss out, we are fundraising. Some examples of things his family have had to, or will have to fund are: seating for him to be comfortable at home, a walker, an eye-gaze computer with which he can communicate, a supportive wheelchair and therapists to help him with this communication and to learn to control some of his movements and to ease daily pain and discomfort.

“Zachary recently discovered that adaptive bikes exist and he is desperate for one! Every four-year old should be able to have a bike. That’s another thing we would love to be able to achieve for him with the help of our fundraising. So many little things that parents usually take for granted have been very tricky and come at a big cost for them. We are so determined to keep finding ways to make sure Zachary not only has all that he needs, but he can achieve what he wants to whilst also having the most fun he possibly can!
