Young eyes on Rye

Paige is a student at Frewen College and is thriving there. She is dyslexic and dyspraxic so school has been quite a challenge for her, especially primary school. The location of the college is quite simply outstanding and provides a safe and calm but enriching environment for their pupils. Frewen nurtures her creativity and she has decided to explore the world of photography using her grandfather’s cameras and later she hopes to marry this up with fashion photography. On Saturday, Paige worked with me as I covering the Rye Christmas Festival. We share a special bond as we are both dyslexic and love taking photos.

When did you start showing an interest in taking photos?

When I was about nine years old I was given an old digital camera by my grandfather as he loved taking photographs and he thought I might too.

Did anyone inspire you to take up this hobby?

When my grandfather passed away three years ago he passed on his professional camera and lenses to me as he hoped I would enjoy using them.

Do you see your future in the photographic world as a career and if so in what field?

I hope to become a professional photographer in the future perhaps taking people’s portraits and having my own studio. I enjoy taking photos of people as I like to capture their personalities and energy.

You had your first job as an assistant photographer on Saturday at the Rye Christmas Festival, what were the highlights for you?

I felt like the experience gave me more confidence in interacting with people and gave me the opportunity to work with a large group of different people rather than one-to-one. Watching you work was really helpful as I saw how you interacted with people and you taught me to look for details not just the whole picture. You seem to be able to capture the fun and enjoyment of all the events you cover and I want to be able to do that too. I think you will teach me a great deal in the future and you make it such fun.

Did it give you a taste of what it is like to cover a live event and make you want to do more?

I felt that it was important to experience this in such a busy social setting and I really enjoyed it. It was a great atmosphere and the people I met were really kind.

I hear that the mayor has asked if you would like to cover some events for the Rye Arts Festival, are you excited by the prospect?

Yes, as I really enjoy listening to music and I think it’s a great way of self-expression. I can’t wait to take some more photos at the different events.  I hope to capture some of the excitement of the free entertainment in the street on the first weekend.

  1. Well done Paige. You took some lovely photos. I bet your grandfather is smiling down on you and delighted as you face your fears and spring over them.
