Gas leak at Rope Walk rail crossing

A gas leak near the Rope Walk/Grove Road rail crossing was being investigated last week, following a report by a member of the public.

This necessitated one-way only southbound traffic coming into town and the closure of the northbound carriage way at the junction with Eagle Road.

Peter Gilbey, Team leader of SGN (Scotia Gas Networks) supervised the drilling of boreholes, about six feet deep either side of the track. These core samples were taken away for analysis in order to help determine the exact location of the leak.

I asked him whether the vibration from rail traffic might have caused the gas pipe to fracture, but he thought it more likely to be the age of the installation. SGN, which owns the pipeline infrastructure, will be returning to site to relay the pipe in due course.
